Sign 8. Numbness or Tingling: The Phantom Sensation
Number eight on the alert list is numbness or a tingling sensation, especially in your hands, fingers, or around your mouth. This sensation can feel like tiny electric shocks or as if ants are walking on your skin. It’s quite peculiar and can certainly raise alarm bells, often indicating that your blood sugar levels might be too low.
When blood glucose levels drop, your body can react in various ways. One such reaction is the constriction of blood vessels, which can lead to reduced blood flow to certain parts of the body, like your extremities. This reduced blood flow can lead to a tingling or numbing sensation – almost like your hand or foot has ‘fallen asleep.’
It’s important to pay attention to these sensations and their patterns. Do you notice a tingling feeling in your fingers when you haven’t eaten for a while? Does this sensation disappear or improve after you’ve had something to eat? If so, it’s possible that low blood sugar is the culprit.
Of course, numbness or tingling can be symptoms of various other health conditions, including nerve damage and certain types of neurological disorders. Therefore, it’s crucial not to jump to conclusions based solely on these symptoms. However, if you experience them in combination with other signs on this list, it might be time to check your blood sugar levels. (*)
